A thin, concentrated layer of gatekeepers, funded largely from outside the continent, has come to stand in for the publishing infrastructure Africa doesn't have. That substitution rewards proximity to a handful of institutions over the work itself, and it leaves a writer's career resting on a small number of people who happened to be paying attention.
